The Department of Sanskrit was established in the year 1983. Upto 1990 it had produced seven batches of Postgraduates. Besides, ten M.Phil and seven Ph.D scholars had completed their degrees. But after 1990 the Department became almost defunct due to the migration of majority of faculty members from the valley. However, the department was revived in the year 2001 and presently it offers the below given courses:

The Department has three faculty positions i.e; one Professor and two Assistant Professors. Prof. S. Razdan is present HOD of the Department. The teachers of this Department are seriously engaged in research work and students show active participation in the academic as well as extra-curricular activities. In Oct 2006, our students namely Ms. Musharaf Shafi, Pir Irafat and Mir Amjad participated and presented thought provoking papers in the 43rd session of the All India Oriental Conference (AIOC) organized by Jammu University from Oct 12-14, 2006. Ms. Abida Ahmad, Research Scholar of this Department, presented her research paper in 54th session of All India Philosophy Congress and her paper was declared as best paper of the event. Sunil Dutt, Research Scholar, attended Elementary and Advanced Courses in Manuscriptology and Sharda Script organized by Kurukhetra University in collaboration with IGNAC, N. Delhi in 2010. Prof. S. Razdan attended 45th session of AIOC Conference Organized by Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan (Deemed University), Tirupati in June 2010. She also presented her paper in 2 day national Seminar organised by the Department of Sanskrit University of Jammu in November 2011. Dr. Md. Miraj Ahmad (Asstt. Professor) and Dr. Kartar Chand Sharma, (Asstt. Professor) presented their papers in various national as well as international seminars/conferences.
